About the Book: The book is a blend of memoir, critique of the healthcare system, and a call to action that explores the critical intersection of racism and healthcare in the United States. Dr. Blackstock, who, along with her twin sister, became part of the first Black mother-daughter legacy from Harvard Medical School, details her journey from a childhood surrounded by Black women physicians to becoming an ER physician and professor. She recounts realizing the profound systemic inequities in medicine, such as the fact that only 2% of U.S. physicians are Black women and that Black Americans face far worse health outcomes than other groups. Legacy chronicles her odyssey to becoming a health equity advocate, especially against the backdrop of the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement.
