About the Book: The story follows fourteen-year-old Mary Jane, a shy, religious girl who loves cooking and show tunes, when she takes a summer nannying job for a local doctor. While her mother believes it to be a “respectable” job, the house is chaos, and the doctor is actually a psychiatrist dedicating the summer to helping a famous rock star dry out. A week into the job, the rock star and his movie star wife move in. Mary Jane introduces order to the chaotic household but also gains a front-row seat to a liberal world of sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Caught between her familiar, sheltered life and this newly revealed world of possibilities, the summer transforms Mary Jane’s understanding of herself and what she wants for her future.
